Living On Mission
Our mission is to know and obey Jesus
and train others to do the same.
We have a full sermon series detailing our mission, Focused: Living on Mission. This provides a more personal and in-depth understanding of our mission and the key elements in carrying out our mission as a united body daily.
Know Jesus
In his book No Silver Bullets, Daniel Im states, “spiritual maturity [should] first be measured by the direction the disciple is moving – toward Christ or away from Christ – and then how far along they are in that journey.” At Journey, we believe discipleship and the maturity of disciples is an everyday journey toward Jesus.
Whether you’re a lifelong believer in Christ or someone who is spiritually curious, the goal is the same: first, to know Christ (John 17:3), and then make Him be known to others (Matthew 28:19-20).
It Starts with Jesus
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV
Obey Jesus
The rock-solid foundation for our lives as followers of Jesus is obedience. What clearly defines and characterizes us as apprentices of Jesus is how we follow him so closely and make daily application of his teachings.
At Journey we believe that following Jesus very closely makes His life and teachings something to emulate and obey. With the words “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock,” (Matthew 7: 24) Jesus is inviting us to embrace obedience to his life and teachings as the solid foundation of our lives.
To Know Jesus is to Obey Him
“Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.'”
John 14:23-24 NIV
Train Others To Do The Same
Our mission is to know and obey Jesus and train others to do the same. This mission is biblically communicated by Jesus Himself with the words, “go and make disciples of all the nations…Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.” (Matthew 28:19-20 NLT)
We are all on different walks of life, and sometimes we need other people who have journeyed the same path. At Journey, we view discipleship as the purposeful connection of individuals who get together regularly and do life together because, we cannot accomplish the mission Jesus set us up for alone.
The Mission is to Go
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
Matthew 28:19-20 NIV
