Living On Mission

Our mission is to know and obey Jesus and train others to do the same.

Focused

Living on Mission

Knowing Jesus inspires courage over comfort as the best expression of our faith.

Know Jesus

Knowing Jesus is a journey and not really a final destination. That means we are growing to know Jesus everyday and with every experience.

In his book No Silver Bullets, Daniel Im states, “spiritual maturity [should] first be measured by the direction the disciple is moving – toward Christ or away from Christ – and then how far along they are in that journey.”  At Journey, we believe discipleship and the maturity of disciples is an everyday journey toward Jesus.

Whether you’re a lifelong believer in Christ or someone who is spiritually curious, the goal is the same: first, to know Christ (John 17:3), and then make Him be known to others (Matthew 28:19-20).

It Starts with Jesus

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV

Focused

Obey Jesus

Obedience is the rock solid foundation Jesus’ followers build their lives on.

Obey Jesus

The rock-solid foundation for our lives as followers of Jesus is obedience. What clearly defines and characterizes us as apprentices of Jesus is how we follow him so closely and make daily application of his teachings.

At Journey we believe that following Jesus very closely makes His life and teachings something to emulate and obey.  With the words “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock,” (Matthew 7: 24) Jesus is inviting us to embrace obedience to his life and teachings as the solid foundation of our lives.

To Know Jesus is to Obey Him

Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.  My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.  Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.'”

John 14:23-24 NIV

Focused

Train Others

Maturing as disciples of Jesus inspires living on mission with Him and for Him through participation in the ministry of revelation and reconciliation.

Train Others To Do The Same

Our mission is to know and obey Jesus and train others to do the same.  This mission is biblically communicated by Jesus Himself with the words,  “go and make disciples of all the nations…Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.”  (Matthew 28:19-20 NLT)

We are all on different walks of life, and sometimes we need other people who have journeyed the same path.  At Journey, we view discipleship as the purposeful connection of individuals who get together regularly and do life together because, we cannot accomplish the mission Jesus set us up for alone.

The Mission is to Go

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

Matthew 28:19-20 NIV

Our Journey towards

Local Missions

Feed Our Neighbors (Monthly)

Journey Christian Church partners with the Jefferson Presbyterian Food Bank to feed our neighbors. Volunteers are needed the first Saturday of every month. You too can be a part of the journey! For more information, please contact Janell Simpson at simpson.janell@gmail.com.

Since 2004, Jefferson Presbyterian Food Bank has served the needy, elderly and homeless of Jefferson Parish. They are an agency of Second Harvest. Completely staffed by volunteers, JPFB serves about 450 families each month.

Operation Christmas Child (Annual)

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief organization. Our mission is to provide local partners around the world with shoeboxes filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies as a means of reaching out to children in their own communities with the Good News of Jesus Christ. We ship these simple gifts outside the United States to children affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease; and to children living on Native American reservations in the U.S.  For more information, visit https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/frequently-asked-questions/

If you’d like to get involved through Journey Christian Church, please email Janell Simpson at simpson.janell@gmail.com.

Our Journey towards

Global Missions

We compiled the most Frequently Asked Questions about our upcoming mission trip and answered them for you below.  If you have any further questions, please email Avryl Pineda at avryl.javier@gmail.com

1. Where are we going?

And how far is it from the airport?

Through our partnership with the Sowers4Pastors ministry, the Journey team will be stationed in the Western mountains of Lempira in the city of Gracias, Honduras. Gracias is approximately 4-5 hours from the San Pedro Sula Airport.  For a map, click here.

The hotel we’ll be staying at is called Guancascos Hotel & Restaurant in Gracias, Honduras.  For more information, click here.

2. Who are the Sowers?

(Pronounced “sa-wers”)

Allen and Trish Sowers, along with their five children, began working in Honduras in 2001.  Always searching for ways to make each donated dollar do the most it can for the Kingdom, the Sowers family felt called to center their efforts on supporting and empowering the work of Honduran missionaries, evangelists, and pastors.  Today, their oldest son, Russell, and his wife, Iris, have taken charge of the ministry operations in Honduras through training, construction project, and feeding programs.

To read more about their ministry efforts, click here.

Sowers4Pastor, Inc is a tax-exempt public charity under the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and must adhere to the IRS compliance guide in order to remain tax-exempt.  For more information on how tax-exempt public charities do their book-keeping (per IRS regulations), click here.

3. How much is this going to cost each individual?

The total cost per person is expected to be around $1300.

Through fundraising and support letters, each individual will need to raise ~$600-$700 (depending on how many go) to cover ground cost.  This includes:

  • 3 meals a day
  • transportation
  • water
  • lodging - hostel type with private bathroom

The airfare varies from day to day, but we are presently estimating it to be around $600-$650 round trip, and we will be looking for the most cost-effective options going forward.  Ongoing updates about costs will be provided as we move forward with fundraising efforts.

4. When are we leaving? Do I need a passport?

Great questions!  The official dates of the trip are Sunday, July 26 – Saturday, August 1, 2020.  These dates were finalized based on  the Sowers4Pastors ability to provide enough translators for the entire  Journey team for the mission trip.  That’s right, you don’t have to speak Spanish to go on this mission trip!  We will know more information after the New Year, but make plans to be in Honduras in the middle-to-late summer.

According to Travel.State.gov website, you should apply for your passport ASAP!  If you already have one, it should be valid for at least 6 months after you return home. For more information about required documents and traveling outside the country, click here or visit https://travel.state.gov/ then click International Travel and the Traveler’s Checklist link is in the 2nd paragraph.

5. What if I am not able to go? Can I still help?

Absolutely!  This is an opportunity for the whole Journey family to get involved through prayer and encouragement. Until our departure date, we will need help with:

  • Fundraising
  • Support letters
  • Preparations for Vacation Bible School (VBS)
  • A captive audience (to practice lessons)
  • Prayer, prayer, and more prayer!

That’s not to mention that we will have group devotionals open to the Journey family to help prepare our hearts and minds for mission work.  Everyone is welcome!  More information coming soon!

We also invite you to consider partnering with the Sowers4Pastor’s through the Child Sponsorship program: $15/month per child.  If you decide to do this prior to the mission trip, arrangements can be made for you to meet your sponsored child while in Honduras!  For more information,  click here.
